What lime does in paper & pulp mills
A paper mill can use lime at several points, and each asks something different of it. In a kraft mill it turns green liquor back into cooking liquor. In a PCC plant it is the raw material for the calcium carbonate filler that gives a sheet its brightness and opacity. Elsewhere it corrects pH and treats the mill's effluent. Say which duty the lime is for first: that decides the form and how tight the specification has to be.

What to specify for this duty
The parameters that decide whether a grade suits the application. Put the figures your process needs on the enquiry and they are written into the quotation.
- CaO or available lime
- Sets how much lime each tonne of liquor or effluent takes, and the cost of running the plant.
- Reactivity and slaking rate
- Decide how quickly and completely the lime reacts in the slaker or causticiser.
- Brightness and colouring impurities
- They carry through to PCC and show in the sheet; state your brightness limit and the iron and manganese you accept.
- Silica, MgO and insoluble matter
- These build up in a closed recovery loop and add grit and dead load; state the maximum your process allows.

Questions from paper & pulp mills buyers
In kraft mills lime converts sodium carbonate in green liquor into sodium hydroxide for white liquor, and the lime mud left behind is usually reburned in the mill's own kiln, with fresh lime as make-up. Lime is also the raw material for precipitated calcium carbonate filler, and it is used for pH control and in effluent treatment. Which lime suits depends on the duty and the mill's specification, and should be confirmed by testing a sample.
Mills commonly dose lime as a slurry for pH correction and coagulation, made either by slaking quicklime or by mixing hydrated lime, which needs no slaker.
