What lime does in sugar mills & sugar processing
In cane sugar manufacture, lime is added to the raw juice as milk of lime — a slurry of calcium hydroxide made by slaking quicklime with water, or by mixing hydrated lime. It raises the juice pH, and with heating, and with sulphur dioxide in sulphitation or carbon dioxide in carbonation, forms calcium salts that settle out as mud, carrying suspended matter and colloids with them. The lime a mill buys has to slake reliably and leave as little grit and insoluble matter behind as possible.

- MgO and silica
- Both can add to scale in the evaporators; state the maximum your process allows.
